Pearl River in Louisiana A catastrophic fish kill occurred earlier this month along the Pearl River in Louisiana. A discharge of “black liquor” from the Bogalusa Paperboard Mill during a plant malfunction is believed to be the cause. NOLA.com reports that the paper mill has been put on notice that it is liable for the kill, with fines and penalties likely to follow. "The water's black, black as paint, dead fish floating everywhere, it's unreal," someone who lives near the river told WWL TV. "I run three nets this morning, took 'em up, they had at least 200-250 pounds of dead fish per net, no live ones at all," said Freddy Lawrence, a longtime Washington Parish fisherman. The Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper, meanwhile, said this:
Fish Bait Radios Nate Wellman wins Northern Open SANDUSKY, Ohio -- Nate Wellman has had a dream since he was 12 years old: to fish in the Bassmaster Classic.
Since then, he’s strived to make that dream a reality by trying to qualify through the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens as well as the Bassmaster Elite Series, but before today, he’s always come up short.
With his win on Lake Erie, he’ll be able to live out that dream this February on Louisiana’s Red River at the 2012 Classic.
The victory was even more special because Wellman had never won on his home water of Lake Erie despite compete on the lake for more than 10 years.
Wellman keeps lead but Devries' 26-7 puts him in hunt Nate Wellman is going after his second Open title. SANDUSKY, Ohio-- Weights soared on Day Two of the 2011 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open on Lake Erie as the winds calmed and gave anglers access to more areas. On Day One, there were six anglers who cracked the 20-pound mark, with Nate Wellman’s 22-4 topping the list. Friday, 15 anglers crossed that mark, with John Devries tallying an astounding 26 pounds, 7 ounces of smallmouth. However, Elite Series pro Wellman managed to retain his lead with a catch of 23-3, giving him 45-7. “I pulled up to where I left ’em biting yesterday afternoon, and it was awesome,” Wellman said. “In my first three casts, I caught two fish, and I was throwing 3-pounders back before I had a limit.” “I ended up leaving there with four fish. But, they were even more loaded up on my third spot. Between the two of us (Wellman and his co-angler), we probably caught 70 bass there.”
KINGSPORT, Tenn. --- The 2011-12 waterfowl hunting seasons were established by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission at its August meeting, held at the Meadowview Conference Center. The TWRC approved the proposals made by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The seasons reflect only calendar date changes from recent years. There will again be a 60-day season for 2011-12 duck hunting, with one split. The season will end Jan. 29, 2012 and a 6-duck bag limit. The maximum number of days allowed for goose hunting seasons under the federal framework will also be utilized. The Statewide Zone duck hunting seasons to be held are Nov. 26-27 and Dec.3-Jan. 29 while the Reelfoot Zone will be held Nov. 12-13 and Dec. 3-Jan. 29. The seasons will maximize the number of weekends open to duck hunting and will end on the latest date allowed (the last Sunday in January).
Daiwa’s Z Heavy Action baitcasters What is it? Daiwa’s Z Heavy Action baitcasters.
What does it do? Allows you to adjust your reel to the conditions at hand.
Why do I need it? To cut down on your backlashes and make consistently longer casts.
How do I use it? Like any other baitcaster, except this one is supposedly easier to handle thanks to its unique braking system. Both left- and right-hand retrieves are available, along with two speeds, 6.4:1 and 7.2:1.

Ranger pro Todd Auten (PAA: Chris Dutton) GADSDEN, Ala. – Neely Henry Lake has been pretty doggone good to Ranger Boats pro Todd Auten.
“It has been pretty good to me,” he said. “I may just have to move over here.”
The quiet veteran from South Carolina came here two years ago and won a storm-shortened PAA Tournament Series event in spring. Twenty-eight months later, in the heat of summer, Auten returned last week to make a run at another much bigger title.
He locked up the PAA Angler of the Year award in a runaway as his two closest competitors faltered. Only eight points in the season standings separated Auten from Gene Larew pro Tommy Biffle of Oklahoma and Hefty pro Mike McClelland of Arkansas.
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Lawrence Mazur of Lancaster, N.Y., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds, 1 ounce Saturday to win the EverStart Series Northern Division event on Lake Erie with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 64 pounds, 8 ounces. For his victory, Mazur earned $26,722 and a 198VX Ranger boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard motor. “It was a tough, tough run, but I made it,” said Mazur. “I’m speechless. It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been at this a long time and had a lot of letdowns, but I finally put it all together.” Mazur said it took him an hour and 20 minutes to run to his spot Saturday. When he got there he couldn’t find fish on his graph, so he relocated to another spot, dropped his drop-shot rig in deep water and proceeded to catch 40 keepers.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources on Monday investigated reports of dead channel catfish in the Shell Rock River from the Marble Rock Impoundment in Floyd County to above Clarksville in Butler County.
"The live channel catfish we found in the area showed signs of stress which means the fish kill is likely on-going and may have been occurring since last week," said Theresa Shay, fisheries technician with the Iowa DNR.
